§Editor's summary

Cobalt is an enterprise-first observability platform with 180 logos and $34M ARR. The market is consolidating: Datadog is winning at the top, Grafana Labs at the open-source bottom, and Cobalt is credibly wedged in the enterprise middle. This is a secondary purchase, not a growth bet.

Decision rationale

180 enterprise logos is not a seed-stage bet; it is a secondary purchase of a de-risked asset. Price is fair; downside is capped by the customer base itself.

IMarket

Observability is consolidating, not contracting.

TAM
$46B[1]
Incumbent share
34%[2]
Enterprise segment
$12B[1]

The observability market is $46B growing 19% YoY, with Datadog holding 34% share at the top end.[1]

New Relic's acquisition by Francisco Partners in 2023 confirmed the pattern: standalone mid-market observability is dead. The survivors are enterprise-only or open-source.[3]

Cobalt's wedge is the enterprise buyer that wants a single pane of glass but refuses Datadog's markup.[4]

IICompetitors

Datadog at the top, Grafana at the bottom.

#EntityNote
01
Datadog
$2.3B revenue; clear market leader. Cobalt wins on price (approximately 40% less) for equivalent feature parity.[2]
02
Grafana Labs + Tempo
Open-source eats the bottom of the market. Cobalt's defense is the enterprise support contract and SSO/compliance packaging.[5]
03
Splunk (Cisco)
Still present in large accounts but technically lagging; Cisco's priorities are security, not observability.[1]

IIITeam

Senior operators, late-career hires.

Priya Patel
CEO
Former VP Engineering at New Relic. Sold once before; knows the enterprise sales motion cold.[6]
Wen Zhang
CTO
Principal engineer on Datadog metrics pipeline 2018–2023. Brought three senior colleagues with him.[6]

IVTraction

$34M ARR, 180 logos, 127% NRR.

ARR
$34M[7]
Logos
180[7]
NRR
127%[8]

Cobalt is at $34M ARR across 180 enterprise logos; ACV is $189K and trending up as new deals lean larger.[7]

Gross revenue retention is 94% across the 24-month observation window; net revenue retention is 127%. Both numbers are consistent with a mature enterprise observability business.[8]

Six customer reference calls confirm: Cobalt's on-call is faster than Datadog's and the per-host pricing is a compelling reason to switch. Standard enterprise SaaS dynamics.[9]

Risks & open questions.

The following are material for IC. Each is backed by the evidence linked in-line. Drafted by Dossier; redlined by Rayen Manaa on Apr 21.

  1. 01
    HIGH

Grafana + Tempo open-source eats the bottom of the market

Grafana + Tempo reached GA in March 2026[5]and now covers 80% of the single-host observability surface at zero license cost. Cobalt's defense is enterprise SSO, audit logging, and a support SLA — a defensible moat, but it shrinks every quarter as Grafana ships enterprise features.
  2. 02
    MODERATE

34% of ARR concentrated in top-five logos

Top-five logos account for 34% of ARR[7]. Two of the five are in the same industry (ad-tech) and renewed on 12-month cycles. Loss of a single anchor would shift the growth narrative materially.
  3. 03
    LOW

No enterprise sales leader hired yet

Cobalt has no dedicated VP Sales as of April 2026. The CEO is currently closing the largest deals herself[6], which is a common pattern for a $34M ARR business but becomes a scaling risk at the next round.
